AN: AN stands for “Army-Navy” and refers to a standard sizing system developed originally by the U.S. military for aircraft fittings. AN sizes are designated by a number, which corresponds to the outside diameter of the tubing in 1/16-inch increments. For example, AN-4 refers to tubing with an outside diameter of 4/16 inch, which is 1/4 inch.

Male Flare Union: “Male” means it has external threads, allowing it to be screwed into a female fitting. “Flare” refers to the type of sealing surface, which is a conical surface formed between the fitting and the mating surface, ensuring a tight seal. “Union” indicates that it is a coupling device used to join two hoses or tubes together.
